Culture on New Technology

*What Kind of Culture Influences Through Technology You Can See Today?

These days, we are influenced by the digital world and we are slowly develop on the digital culture without noticing itThe influences through technology that can be seen clearly is that people nowadays want things to go and move fast that they can't even wait a single minute. The technology is making our live much easier than before but it is slowly getting to make a huge role in human life day by day. A lot of program or device have been created by people for the past decades such as cellphone, computer and PDA. Now, almost every work can be done through Internet and that is what we called digital culture. From communicate to our friends until paying the electric bills, almost everything can be done on the Internet nowadays. Even people now start talking about having a digital culture style of learning as we can see student submitting their works, doing their assignments and downloading notes just through their phone and personal computers. For the moment, attending the lecture class and submitting works to the lecturer still cannot be done through the Internet. People socializing, playing games and working through this technology and gradually people are more connected with each other via Internet based technology.

The online television player that replaces normal television.

Using e-mails to send information instead of writing mails.

Banking matter such as transfer fund and bill payment can be made online without going to the bank.

Discussing things through forum.

Instead of meet up and have conversation face to face, people prefer to send instant messages.

So, it is so true that Internet has slowly becoming the basis of people's life. We are revolving into the new culture that is digital culture.

* Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, how

There is every chance to change the culture that slowly influencing our life nowadays. New technologies can be create in the future to reshape back our culture before it becomes much worse. For example, big software companies can create a software to limit the time for kid spend to play games on their computers.

Media Imperialism

Based on my reading on wikipedia the third part of The Power of Nightmare: The Shadows in the Cave, tells us about the actual emergence of al-Qaeda that the Curtis makes a specific attemp to allay fears of a dirty bomb attack, and concludes by reassuring viewers that politicians will eventually have to concede that some threats are exaggerated and others altogether devoid of reality.

Media imperialism is not always an international occurrence. However, a form of Imperialism is also in the meaning of when a single company or corporation controls all the media in a country. Nation such as Italy and Canada are often accused of possessing an Imperial media structure, based on the fact that much of their media is controlled by one corporation or owner. US and UK for example have seen as the powerful nations used the media to create bad perception and accusations to show power.

A media source which ignores and/or censors important issues and events severely damages freedom of information. Many modern tabloid, twenty-four hour news channels and other mainstream media sources have increasingly been criticized for not confirming to general standards of journalistic intergrity.

Media Effect on Internet

McLuhan was the person who responsible in invented this tetrad of media. As you can see, there are 4 human action that affected the medium of media that is enhances, reverses, retrieves and obsolesces. There are many type of medium and I choose to elaborate about Internet.
From what that I've been research on, Internet is a global network of interconnected computers, enabling users to share information along multiple channels. Normally, a computer that connects to the Internet can access information from a vast array of available servers and other computers by moving information from them to the computer's local memory. The same connection allows that computer to send information to servers on the network; that information is in turn accessed and potentially modified by a variety of other interconnected computers. A majority of widely accessible information on the Internet consists of inter-linked hypertext documents and other resources of the World Wide Web (WWW). Sent and received information with web browsers typically can be manage by computer users ; other software for users' interface with computer networks includes specialized programs for electronic mail, online chat, file transfer, file transfer and file sharing.

Effect: Advantages and Disadvantages

Internet has brought a very huge effect on the society and exceed beyond the expectation. Currently, just a few seconds is needed for us to communicate with people from different area of the world. Plus, it's easier and cheaper compared to the traditional methods. Internet also made it easier for us to find any kind of information just about every known to human being and it is very practical. Internet was the greatest gift ever for us.

However, Internet offers pornographic sides which perhaps the biggest threat to a kid's mental life. It is the most serious issue concerning the Internet. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found and can be a detrimental factor to letting children use the Internet. Though, internet can also create havoc, destruction and its misuse can be very fatal, the advantages of it outweigh its disadvantages.

Obscenity, Pornography and Indecency

Obscenity word did come from the French obscenite or Latin obscenitas (Dictionary) at the late of 16th century. It brings a meaning of the state or quality of being obscene. The obscene over here can be define in terms of behaviour, language or image as it is very universal. However, it is usually use in the way of extremely offensive word or an expression. Pornography on the other hand, is printed or visual material containing explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings. The word itself origin mid 19th century from Greek word 'Pornographos' that means writing about prostitutes that came from porne 'prostitutes+graphien 'write' (Dictionary). Finally, indecency refers to indecent behaviour that occurs in form of indecent acts, gesture or expression.

Media Literacy

Media literacy has such a big meaning in the world of media. A reader must has a good media literacy ability to understands on what does a writer trying to inform. So, media literacy is actually the ability to sift through and analyze the messages that inform, entertain and sell to us every day. It is the ability to bring critical thinking skills to bear on all media, for example, from music videos and Web environments to product placement in films and virtual displays on Extreme Games skateboards. Media literacy education enables tools to help people critically analyze messages to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming (and the reasons for such), and to understand how structural features. It is important for FCM students to have a good command of media literacy as we may need various kind of information to have the best insight of our studies. Media literacy also teach us to construct our own words on any topics, that prevent any activity of plagiarism.

Media Stereotype

http://web.media.mit.edu/~ayah/MediaTheories/

In this link above, it tells about the stereotype of multiple representations of some groups in the media. In this research report, it focused on the Arab community representations in the media. It mostly occured in various type of media, even cartoons. For me, stereotype act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people—usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation. There are lots of personal experience from me about this media stereotype. One of it, the villain in a movie always come in a bad looks or bad style. It reflects a perception to everyone that every nice looking human is a nice people. It does not make sense at all. But it seems movie nowadays did backtrack in this stereotype a little bit.

Internet News: Believe It Or Not?

The comic strips above entitled "Rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide, and fast on the Internet. It is being taken from "Introduction to Mass Communications: Media Literacy and Culture" by Stanley Baran. The sequence above shows that a man who reads the news from the Internet that was actually written by a kid.

It brings out the message to people that Internet is a place where every actions are not forbidden. Everyone is free to voice out their opinion about everything. For me, I do not pay full trust to the news appear on the Internet. I will believe the news authenticity if it come out with a proof and a strong claim to the story. If the news are written without a strong claim to it, I may not believe with what being told by the writer.

The situation in the comic strips also tells that the rumors and lies nowadays are fast and easily to be spread through the whole world. With just a computer and an Internet connection, everyone are able to write anything that they want in the form of blog, e-mail or any other medium that be able in the Internet world. It is hard to determine the authenticity of the news in Internet nowadays. So, we must be careful on whether to believe on any news or not.

The Impacts of Social Media

Well, that video itself has come up with a very good information on what is social media is all about. Nowadays, social media exist in many ways, especially in Internet. Blogs, Internet forums and social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace seem to develop fastly. There are lot of advantages in using those medium. Social media is all about fast and easy interaction.

First of all, social media enables people the easiest and cheapest medium to give out their opinion in any topics that they want to talk. For example, by using the blog, it is free for anyone to express their thoughts in any topics. There is no restriction in this case, whether it is sensitive or not.

Social networking, that is also one of the parts of social media, had also brought a revolution in the ways of human interaction and socializing. Social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook had a brought a huge impact to the human society. These sites are created in intention to target the teenagers. They enables faster communication, to share things like pictures and videos, interaction among beings and to express their thoughts about some current issues.

However, social media may also bring harm to the society as it is so free and uncontrollable. The situation is like me that is now using the blog to wrote on all these things without any inspection. It is more easy to express your thoughts these days but this kind of . There are pros and cons in participating in the social media.

MLC Class Week 4

Hmm..today's MLC class?I thought it was as normal as before..MLC class is always an informative class for me..Mr. Radzi's style of deliverance the speech is good and interesting too at that morning..but students, like me, might easily loss the attention to the class..because the class itself is just about facts,theory..it always had high probabilities to make the students feel bore..so lot of students for sure will lost their concentration and starting making their own 'forum'..I think Mr. Radzi might needs more multimedia devices like a video show to make the students get easily bore in the future..
