Media Literacy

Media literacy has such a big meaning in the world of media. A reader must has a good media literacy ability to understands on what does a writer trying to inform. So, media literacy is actually the ability to sift through and analyze the messages that inform, entertain and sell to us every day. It is the ability to bring critical thinking skills to bear on all media, for example, from music videos and Web environments to product placement in films and virtual displays on Extreme Games skateboards. Media literacy education enables tools to help people critically analyze messages to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming (and the reasons for such), and to understand how structural features. It is important for FCM students to have a good command of media literacy as we may need various kind of information to have the best insight of our studies. Media literacy also teach us to construct our own words on any topics, that prevent any activity of plagiarism.

MLC Class Week 7

Media Culture class for week 7 is the best Media Culture class i'd attend for this semester.. I don't fell asleep, I can concentrate on what Ms. Helena tried to address and I can understand on what the class is all about that day. Cool! The best part of the class is when some students came out in front to tell the people the example of cultural stereotype. Damn funny!

Media Stereotype

http://web.media.mit.edu/~ayah/MediaTheories/

In this link above, it tells about the stereotype of multiple representations of some groups in the media. In this research report, it focused on the Arab community representations in the media. It mostly occured in various type of media, even cartoons. For me, stereotype act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people—usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation. There are lots of personal experience from me about this media stereotype. One of it, the villain in a movie always come in a bad looks or bad style. It reflects a perception to everyone that every nice looking human is a nice people. It does not make sense at all. But it seems movie nowadays did backtrack in this stereotype a little bit.

Internet News: Believe It Or Not?

The comic strips above entitled "Rumors, lies and innuendo spread far, wide, and fast on the Internet. It is being taken from "Introduction to Mass Communications: Media Literacy and Culture" by Stanley Baran. The sequence above shows that a man who reads the news from the Internet that was actually written by a kid.

It brings out the message to people that Internet is a place where every actions are not forbidden. Everyone is free to voice out their opinion about everything. For me, I do not pay full trust to the news appear on the Internet. I will believe the news authenticity if it come out with a proof and a strong claim to the story. If the news are written without a strong claim to it, I may not believe with what being told by the writer.

The situation in the comic strips also tells that the rumors and lies nowadays are fast and easily to be spread through the whole world. With just a computer and an Internet connection, everyone are able to write anything that they want in the form of blog, e-mail or any other medium that be able in the Internet world. It is hard to determine the authenticity of the news in Internet nowadays. So, we must be careful on whether to believe on any news or not.
